About the Tokaido Fifty-Three Stations
The Tokaido was one of the five major highways established during the Edo period by the Tokugawa shogunate to unify the nation. It connected Nihonbashi in Tokyo to Sanjo Ohashi in Kyoto, spanning 492 km. Fifty-three post stations were established along the route to relay travelers and goods.
Utagawa Hiroshige's ukiyo-e prints depicting scenes along this highway are famous and were often featured as subjects in waka poetry and haiku. About Sekishuku
Sekishuku (Sekishuku) corresponds to present-day Seki-cho, Kameyama City, Mie Prefecture, and was the 47th post town along the Tōkaidō. It served as a key transportation hub since ancient times. While a post town on the Tōkaidō, it also stood at the entrance to the Ise Betsu Kaidō, a branch road leading to the Ise Kaidō used by pilgrims traveling from the Kansai region to visit Ise Grand Shrine.
Even today, over 200 traditional merchant houses remain along the approximately 1.8-kilometer stretch from Higashi-Oiwake to Nishi-Oiwake. Sekishuku is the only place where the historical streetscape remains intact, designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
Utagawa Hiroshige's ukiyo-e depicts the early morning preparations for the daimyo procession's honjin (main inn) departure, beginning hurriedly in the dark.
