About the Tokaido Fifty-Three Stations
The Tokaido was one of the five major highways established during the Edo period by the Tokugawa shogunate to unify the nation. It connected Nihonbashi in Tokyo to Sanjo Ohashi in Kyoto, spanning 492 km. Fifty-three post stations were established along this route to relay travelers and goods.
Utagawa Hiroshige's ukiyo-e prints depicting scenes along this highway are famous and were often featured as subjects in waka poetry and haiku.
About Shinagawa-juku
Shinagawa-juku, located in present-day Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo, was the first post station on the Tōkaidō.
This town prospered through fishing and maritime trade, concentrating shipping merchants and seafood wholesalers. It became a bustling hub for travelers, including daimyō on their sankin-kōtai duties.
While travel by samurai for official duties dominated in the early Edo period, sightseeing trips by commoners visiting temples and shrines gradually became popular.
Numerous teahouses lined the streets, where travelers setting out on the Tōkaidō journey and those seeing them off would hold farewell banquets, reluctant to part.
This model depicts the scene at the foot of Gotenyama, famous for its cherry blossoms. About the Kit Compactly condenses traditional Japanese scenery; laser-cut for precision and easy assembly.
