About the Tokaido Fifty-Three Stations
The Tokaido was one of the five major highways established during the Edo period by the Tokugawa shogunate to unify the nation. It connected Nihonbashi in Tokyo to Sanjo Ohashi in Kyoto, spanning 492 km. Fifty-three post stations were set up along the route to relay travelers and goods.
Utagawa Hiroshige's ukiyo-e prints depicting scenes along this highway are famous and were often featured as subjects in waka poetry and haiku. About Sattarei Pass
Sattarei Pass (さったれい) is a mountain pass located in Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture.
Satta Pass features steep mountains jutting out toward the sea. One side overlooks the vast ocean, making it a notorious section of the Tōkaidō known as “Oyashirazu” (literally “parent-less”) and historically counted among the Tōkaidō's three major perilous sections.
Consequently, Satta Pass was constructed as a detour route on the mountain side.
Located between Yui-juku and Okitsu-juku on the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō, the view from the pass is said to be the most beautiful along the entire route.
In the distance stands Mount Fuji, while white sailboats dot the beautiful blue waters of Suruga Bay.
On the sheer cliff above, a passing traveler cautiously leans out to gaze at Fuji.
The two pine trees in the foreground, bent by the sea breeze, create an interesting scene.
