The Mitsubishi F-2 is a support jet fighter for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. This aircraft comes in a single-seat A model and a two-seat B model, with the two-seat variant primarily used for training purposes.
The Japan Air Self-Defense Force has traditionally relied on the F-15J interceptor fighter to defend against threats such as fighters and bombers. The JASDF has maintained a defense posture where the F-15J interceptor fighter counters threats like fighters and bombers, while the F-1 support fighter defends against threats like ships and tanks. The F-2, jointly developed by Japan and the United States, is the successor to this F-1. Distinctive external features include a fuselage and main wings slightly larger than the F-16, an enlarged radome to house the new radar, and a three-section canopy designed to counter bird strikes during low-altitude flight. Japanese carbon-based composite materials, renowned worldwide, are used in various parts of the airframe, including the main wings, contributing to reduced aircraft weight. Additionally, CCV technology incorporating findings from T-2 CCV testing was implemented. The JASDF's first fly-by-wire sidestick was adopted, ensuring safety and superior flight performance. Weapons can be mounted on 11 stations across the wings and fuselage, accommodating air-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles (such as the domestically produced ASM-2), various bombs, and auxiliary fuel tanks. Unit deployment began in April 2001 with the 3rd Squadron at Misawa Air Base. Moving forward, the Air Self-Defense Force will deploy the F-2 to replace the remaining F-1 and F-4EJ Kai aircraft. Together with the F-15J interceptor fighter, it will defend Japan's skies in the 21st century.
