Product Introduction
The Imperial Japanese Navy Series welcomes the “Japanese Navy Light Cruiser Sakura” with two 25mm machine guns included.
The light cruiser “Sakura” was the fourth ship of the Agano class. Her keel was laid at the Sasebo Naval Arsenal in November 1942 (Showa 17) during wartime, and she was completed in November 1944 (Showa 19) near the end of the war.
The Agano-class was planned as flagship for torpedo squadrons, featuring a distinctly modern appearance and armament unlike the previous 5,500-ton class.
It carried three twin 15cm main guns and two newly developed twin 8cm high-angle guns.
Sakurago was completed the month after the Battle of Leyte Gulf, by which time the Combined Fleet was unable to conduct organized operations. She moved from Sasebo to Kure, engaged in training in the western inland sea, but never saw combat. The month before the war ended, she was transferred to Maizuru. She remained there until the war's conclusion.
After the war, she served as a demobilization transport ship, traveling between Japan and overseas territories. In July 1946, she was assigned as a nuclear test ship at Bikini Atoll and was sunk.
This product recreates her appearance at the time of completion, equipped with Type 21, Type 22, and Type 13 radar sets.
It faithfully reproduces the modern Agano-class hull form, distinct from the previous line of Japanese light cruisers.
The instruction manual has been redesigned for improved readability and clarity. The product features a full hull specification allowing reproduction down to the keel, and includes a display stand for enjoyment after completion. Both the conventional one-piece structure parts and more precise two-piece parts for the 25mm twin machine guns are included. The 25mm machine guns use a two-piece construction, making it easy to paint the gunmetal barrel and the hull color base separately. Two types of decals are included, featuring the Imperial Japanese Navy ensign, the Rising Sun flag, and carrier aircraft markings.
