Pit Road - Skywave Series - Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Destroyer - DDH-144 - J77
The Kurama entered service in 1981 as the second ship of the Shirane-class anti-submarine helicopter escort destroyers. While an enlarged and improved version of the preceding Haruna-class, it featured a large computer installed in the CIC, dramatically enhancing its information processing capabilities. It also drew attention by mounting Sea Sparrow short-range SAMs and 20mm CIWS Phalanx systems for individual ship air defense and protection. Later, the ship's helicopter was upgraded from the HSS-2B to the SH-60J, further enhancing its anti-submarine capabilities. The Shirane-class remained the largest escort vessel until the Kongō-class appeared, and the Kurama served long as a core vessel in the escort fleet. However, with the commissioning of DDH-184 Kaga in March 2017, it completed its role and was decommissioned that same month, much to regret.
The kit reproduces its appearance just before decommissioning.
Differences from its sister ship, the Shirane, are also reproduced, such as the satellite antenna placement, fin stabilizers, and bilge keel shape.
