Micro Ace “1/72 Scale Warplane Series Imperial Japanese Army Reconnaissance Aircraft Mitsubishi Ki-15-II Type 97 Staff Reconnaissance 2 (Type 98 Land Reconnaissance 11)” plastic model kit. The Ha-8 engine equipped on the Type 1 was highly reliable, contributing to the success of the 97-type Staff Reconnaissance. However, in November 1937, the military ordered an upgrade to the air-cooled 14-cylinder radial Ha-261 engine (later designated the 99-type 950-horsepower engine) to further enhance performance.
The modified version was completed in January 1938. Following test results, development of the Type 2, featuring engine replacement and various modifications, was formally authorized in June 1938.
Two prototypes were built. After evaluation, adoption as the Type 97 Model 2 Command Reconnaissance Aircraft (Ki-15II) was officially decided in September 1940.
