Product Description
During the battles surrounding Guadalcanal, the site of the decisive clash between Japan and the United States, the Imperial Japanese Navy suffered heavy losses of its fleet destroyers. This left the navy unable to adequately perform not only convoy escort duties but also fleet escort duties. This situation created an urgent need for ships capable of performing multiple tasks, including anti-aircraft and anti-submarine warfare, forced transport, convoy escort, and fleet escort. However, it was pointless to build them over the years required for conventional fleet destroyers, so the condition that they could be completed in a few months was added. The Matsukaze-class destroyers appeared under this unprecedented shipbuilding plan.
