Yamashita Hobby 1/700 Warship Model Series Special Type Destroyer II Class Ayanami SP Plastic Model NVE13
Introducing the limited edition of the Special Type Destroyer II Class [Ayanami], hero of the Third Battle of the Solomon Islands.
The etching parts set includes window frames, boat davits, and torpedo loading cranes.
On August 15, 1942, despite losing the battleship Hiei in an earlier naval engagement, the Imperial Japanese Navy decided to re-enter the fray, designating the surviving battleship Kirishima as the main force of the Guadalcanal bombardment squadron.
At this time, the destroyer “Ayashio” was part of the advance reconnaissance task force. Before her eyes appeared the U.S. surface force, consisting of two battleships and four destroyers, which had launched to intercept the Japanese fleet.
Operating alone, the Ayanami engaged this American force in a gun and torpedo battle. She sank the destroyers Preston and Walk with gunfire, then delivered the final blow to Walk with torpedoes. A torpedo also struck the Benham, sinking her.
It also sank the heavily damaged and burning Preston. Furthermore, shells fired at the new battleship South Dakota damaged its electrical circuits, hindering its combat effectiveness during the battle.
