Product Description
Yamashita Hobby 1/700 Warship Model Series Mutsuki-class Destroyer Satsuki 1943 Plastic Model\ Based on a concept to enhance the anti-aircraft armament of Mutsuki-class destroyers and convert them into high-speed transport vessels utilizing their speed, the destroyer Satsuki, one of the Mutsuki-class ships, received additional 25mm machine guns.
Compared to other Mutsuki-class destroyers undergoing similar upgrades at the time, Satsuki's modifications were limited to the removal of one main gun. While other ships removed half their main guns (two guns) and one of their two torpedo tubes to enhance anti-aircraft armament, Satsuki retained its original silhouette by only removing the single main gun at the stern.
The upgrades involved installing two triple 25mm machine gun mounts in the space vacated by the rear gun turret, and adding two twin 25mm machine gun mounts in gunnery stations on both sides of the bridge.
The effectiveness of this enhanced anti-aircraft armament would be tested in combat operations around islands in the Guadalcanal and South Pacific areas, where Japanese and American forces clashed. Satsuki and Fumizuki, believed to be convoy escorts, repelled an attack by approximately 40 US carrier-based aircraft, indirectly aiding a convoy operating separately and earning commendation for their valor.
