Product Introduction
Yamashita Hobby 1/700 Warship Model Series Mutsuki-class Destroyer Yūzuki 1944 Plastic Model
The Mutsuki-class destroyers are broadly divided into two types based on equipment differences: the early type and the late type.
The early type featured armament primarily consisting of depth charge equipment on the aft deck, while the late type was equipped with paravanes and other devices on the same deck, contributing to mine sweeping duties.
Yūzuki belongs to the paravane-equipped late type, alongside sister ships Kikuzuki, Mikazuki, and Mochizuki.
Most Mutsuki-class ships were deployed for convoy escort duties, spending their days traveling back and forth between the home islands and the South Pacific.
For this class, often criticized for its weak anti-aircraft armament, the weapons were gradually modified to suit the increasingly frontline battlefields.
Half of the four main guns, two mounts, were removed. In their place, twin and triple 25mm mounts were installed to strengthen the anti-aircraft armament.
After August 20, 1944, Yūzuki, along with her sister ships, formed a “Japanese Hunter-Killer Force” composed of Ōtaka-class aircraft carriers and was assigned to convoy escort duties.
By December 1944, the Mutsuki-class destroyers were decimated in these fierce convoy battles, leaving only Uzuki and Yūzuki surviving.
They then participated in Operation Tano, aiming to land military supplies and troops for Japanese forces confronting the U.S. forces that had landed at Ormoc, Leyte Island.
However, the American attack was fierce, resulting in the complete destruction of all transport ships. The escorting Uzuki and Yūzuki also suffered losses: Uzuki sank on December 12th, and Yūzuki, the last surviving Mutsuki-class destroyer, was sunk on the 13th. This marked the total loss of the entire Mutsuki-class.
The Mutsuki-class destroyer “Yūzuki” with enhanced anti-aircraft armament is now available as a product.
