Pit Road - Skywave Series - Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force - DDG-171 - J86
This class represents the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's third generation of guided missile destroyers. The lead ship, the “Hatakaze,” was constructed at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Nagasaki Shipyard and entered service on March 27, 1986. Compared to the preceding Tachikaze-class, its propulsion system was the first gas turbine propulsion for a missile destroyer. The missile launcher position was also changed from the traditional aft location to the bow, enabling countermeasures against forward air threats.
To protect these launchers from waves, it uniquely features a bulwark at the bow among escort vessels.
On October 24, 2014, it was reassigned to the 1st Escort Squadron, 1st Escort Group. However, in March 2020, it is scheduled to be replaced by its successor, the Maya, and reclassified as a training ship.
The kit adds newly molded hull bottom parts and satellite communication antennas.
